A 17-year-old boy who was found to be carrying a police-style baton in his pocket has been given a four-month detention order.

The teenager, who can’t be named for legal reasons, appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court yesterday (12/02/19) and pleaded guilty to one charge of possession of an offensive weapon.

The charge related to an incident at Buckhurst Recreation Ground, in Swindon, on 19 December 2018.

An officer was dealing with another suspect for possession of cannabis when the defendant approached and was thrown a quantity of cannabis by the initial suspect.

He then turned to run, but was chased on foot and detained by police.

He resisted arrest and was aggressive towards the arresting officer, and when he was searched a black baton with a metal handle was found in his pocket.

PC Jonathan Kilburn, from Swindon South Community Policing Team, said: “This arrest came as part of a proactive crackdown on drug supply and violence in Swindon.

“The defendant in this case claimed he was carrying the baton as protection, but it is extremely worrying if our young people are arming themselves in this way.

“We hope this sends a message to young people involved in this type of criminal behaviour – we are taking action and we will prosecute.”
