Information sent on behalf of Wiltshire Police

Two people have been arrested after a police officer spotted suspicious activity close to Erlestoke Prison yesterday.

The officer was on routine patrols in the area at around 2.45pm yesterday (19/03/19) when he saw a black Audi, which quickly did a u-turn when it realised police were nearby.

He followed the car and stopped it in nearby Edington, and when he searched the vehicle he found a rucksack containing tightly-packed packages containing what is believed to have been tobacco and cannabis.

We also seized a number of mobile phones and a small quantity of what is believed to be Class A and Class B drugs.

A 45-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman, both from Bristol, have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to take prohibited articles into a prison.

They are both currently in custody at Melksham Police Station.

Sergeant Pete Foster, from Wiltshire East Community Policing Team, said: "This is another great example of proactive work by our police officers, who are out on patrol keeping an eye out for suspicious activity.

"We will continue to work closely with HMP Erlestoke to tackle criminality and disrupt the activities of those people who are trying to get illegal items, including drugs, into inmates."

We would always urge people to report suspicious activity to Wiltshire Police via 101, or 999 if a crime is in progress.
