Five people arrested in Trowbridge following early morning burglary

Five people were arrested in Trowbridge in the early hours of Sunday morning following a burglary in which a car was stolen.

At approximately 4.30am we received a report that a Volkswagen Polo had been stolen from an address in Cornbrash Rise.

Two males were seen in a second vehicle at the same address, but they made off from the scene when they were disturbed by the occupant.

A number of items were stolen from inside the address, including car keys, house keys and a mobile phone.

Officers attended the scene and located the stolen vehicle in the area – it had been damaged and abandoned.

Enquiries were carried out and a number of officers, including dog handlers, traffic officers and armed officers who were in the area at the time and were able to assist, conducted further area searches. They located five individuals who were subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary.

They are two 15-year-olds, two 16-year-olds and a 20-year-old. All are from the Trowbridge area and have been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.

Inspector James Brain said: “This was an excellent team effort by all officers involved – some of whom had just come on duty and within an hour of starting, had made these arrests.  It is also a really good example of joined up working between community policing officers and specialist officers who are able to provide a variety of additional resources to local policing.

“We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour – it causes fear amongst our communities and people should not be made to feel this way while in their own homes.

“I would urge members of the public to remain vigilant, keep doors and windows locked, especially at night times, and report any suspicious behaviour immediately. If you think a crime is in progress, call 999.

“We’d also urge anyone in the Hilperton and Trowbridge areas to check their garages and sheds for any evidence of attempted break-ins, or items stolen, and to report any information to us immediately, via 101 and quote crime reference number 54190065832.”
