Alert message sent 24/09/2019 13:41:00

Information sent on behalf of Wiltshire Police

A 28-year-old man from Trowbridge has been arrested following reports of a disturbance in the town.

At approximately 8.30pm yesterday (23/09), we were called to reports of a disturbance near to Sainsbury's involving a male kicking vehicles.

On arrival a man matching the description was spotted by officers; although he initially ran from the scene officers managed to detain him soon afterwards after he jumped on to the bonnet of a police car causing some minor damage.

A small quantity of drugs and a lock knife were found on his person.

A local man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, possession of a controlled drug (believed to be an amphetamine) and a lock knife.

He is currently in custody at Melksham Police Station.

Sgt Will Ayres, from the West Wiltshire Community Policing Team, said:  "We never tolerate the possession of drugs and illegal offensive weapons on the streets of Wiltshire.
"This is particularly timely as we are half way thorough our Op Sceptre knife crime awareness campaign and amnesty; this means that there is now one less knife in our community which could cause serious harm."

Op Sceptre is a two week knife crime awareness campaign and amnesty which runs until Sunday 29 September.

The knife amnesty gives people the chance to dispose of knives and weapons by simply taking them to one of the specified police stations, churches or community centres and dropping them in to an amnesty bin; those handing in knives and weapons will not face prosecution for possession of a knife or weapon and can remain anonymous.

Special amnesty bins are available at 13 locations across the county.

Amnesty bin locations:

Swindon's Gablecross Police Station
Broadgreen Community Centre, Swindon
Town Centre policing point, Swindon
Pinetrees Community Centre, Swindon

Melksham Police Station
St Andrews Church, Melksham
Monkton Park, Chippenham
