Information sent on behalf of Wiltshire Police

Two people are currently in custody following a pursuit in Calne last night. (31/03)

Shortly after 9pm, officers were on patrol in an unmarked police vehicle in the Chippenham area when they were made aware of a Jaguar E-Pace believed to be involved in drug supply.

The vehicle was spotted at the Bridge Centre roundabout and was followed towards Derry Hill where a marked police car then attempted to stop the vehicle but when officers approached the driver, the Jaguar reverse rammed one of the police cars and made off in the direction of Sandy Lane.

A pursuit continued through Sandy Lane, and a number of items were seen to be thrown from the vehicle as it continued at speed before joining the A3102 towards Calne.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop in Azalea Close.

Two people were detained.

Cannabis, a mobile phone and drugs paraphernalia were seized from the vehicle and a large quantity of cannabis was found by officers when they retraced the route of the pursuit.

A man in his 20s from Devizes was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, taking a vehicle without consent, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence, driving without insurance, drug driving and possession with intent to supply class B drugs.

An 18-year-old woman from Devizes was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class B drugs.

Both remain in Melksham custody for further questioning.

Det Insp Paul Franklin said: “Despite officers stopping this vehicle in Derry Hill, the driver continued to drive at excess speed and dangerously before eventually coming to a stop in a dead end in Calne. Fortunately, there were very few other vehicles on the road at the time of the incident and no road users were injured, however, it could have been a very different story.

“This incident shows that officers will continue to target those individuals who are involved in suspected drug activity despite the very uncertain times we find ourselves in. These people were also showing complete disregard for the government guidelines to stay at home and are putting further demand on emergency services at an already busy time.”

Anyone who saw the Jaguar being driven from Chippenham to Calne yesterday should call 101 and quote crime reference number 54200031659.
