Nottingham Knockers operating within the area

Alert message sent 14/09/2021 12:19:00

Information sent on behalf of Wiltshire Police

Over the past week we have received a number of reports of  cold callers visiting homes in the Cricklade area trying to sell goods. This type of caller is commonly known as a Nottingham Knocker.
Unwanted knocks at the door from people trying to sell you products can be a nuisance, especially if they happen regularly.
Sometimes these may be from genuine companies but some visitors’ intentions are fraudulent, whether it’s to sell counterfeit goods or services or simply gather information about you or the property. In some cases, fraudsters may even pretend to be from your utilities company and use the excuse of needing to take a meter reading as a way to gain access to your house.
Don’t allow anyone into your home without some basic checks such as do they have photo ID? Never call the phone number on their ID card to check them out. Ask the salesperson to wait outside, shut and lock the door and find the company number on the internet. If they’re genuine, they’ll understand.

Why not print out the No Cold Callers image at the top of this message and put it in a window near your door or on the door if it has a glazed panel?

If in doubt you can make a report online or call 101. In an emergency always call 999.
