Be aware of door-to-door pedlars in the Corsham area

Alert message sent 12/11/2021 09:57:00

Information sent on behalf of Wiltshire Police

We had several calls overnight concerning Pedlars calling at addresses in the Corsham area, the Pedlars (sometimes referred to as Nottingham knockers) call at address’s and offer goods for sale at the door without a Pedlars certificate, which is contrary to the PEDLARS ACT 1871. Pedlars certificates are issued by each Police service and are valid across England and Wales.
Anyone applying for a Pedlars certificate is checked by the relevant Police service for suitability and the issue of the certificate can be refused, often fake certificates will mention “HAWKERS” The Nottingham knockers made comments claiming to be reformed prisoners and ex-military, however when checked by officers this was found to be untrue. If this was a legitimate program for released offenders they would have a Pedlars certificate and notification would have been issued.

Pedlar
A Pedlar is a person selling goods door to door on foot carrying the goods with them, without prior appointment. Excluding items such as fish, fruit, veg or obtaining orders for goods to be delivered at a later date.

Offences
1. Acting as a pedlar without having obtained a certificate.
2. Failing to produce a valid certificate upon request so it can be read or copied.
Please do not buy goods from people who are not legitimately selling and inform the Police on 101.
