Crime Prevention Advice

As the Winter draws in with the longer evenings our advice for keeping home/outbuilding security tips.

Home Security Tips
■ In almost one third of burglaries, thieves gain access through an open window or door. Make sure doors and windows are kept locked.
■ Secure your doors. Check the condition of the frames and glass panels to make sure they are secure.
■ If you’re out late, leave a light on to give the impression you’re home.
■ Never leave a spare key in a hiding place, such as under the doormat or in a flowerpot - a burglar will look there first.
■ If you’re going away consider using timer switches, they can be fitted to light bulbs, radios or TVs and programmed to switch on and off when required.
■ Use your burglar alarm if you have one.
■ Make sure your sheds and garages are secure. Always lock ladders and tools away to stop a burglar using them.

Shed/Garage Security Tips
■ Never leave a shed or garage unlocked, even when you are gardening especially if it has a connecting door to the house.
■ Make sure all doors are fitted with good quality locks and lock them.
■ If your shed has windows, consider fitting wire mesh to the inside of them.
■ Consider installing a battery-operated shed alarm.
■ Photograph valuable and unusual garden ornaments and keep them in a secure place.
■ Consider having lockable steel boxes fitted to the floor of your shed to store tools in.
■ Visibly mark your garden and power tools with your postcode.
